Language Arts Reflection
Gabbi Kaczynski 2011
This year one of my favorite writing pieces was the advertising essay. To be a good essayist you have to observe your world and have opinions about what you see. Having three or more reasons or proof to support your thesis will really boost the quality of your essay. Also, essayists try to use the “successful paragraph method” which helps with sentence variety. One of the best techniques is to stick to the main idea. The last basic thing you need to know is the three words that make most people crazy…. edit, edit, EDIT!

I think I did very well on my essay. I stuck to the main idea. To use the “successful paragraph method” was sort of a challenge for me because I tried to fit my sentences to the method, although I knew that it was just to help my sentence variety. Other than that, I think I have good reasons to support my thesis for every paragraph.

Editing was another hard thing for me because I don’t have the best eye for little mistakes. Finally, I restated my thesis without repeating the same sentence. These are some of the qualities that I did to make my essay a well done piece. This year, I think I really progressed in my writing. I know that I will always remember the great tricks I learned this year.

Advertising Techniques

By Gabbi Kaczynski March 30, 2011 6-P

Advertisers love to play tricks on us to get our money when we buy products we see on television, on the radio, in magazines, EVERYWHERE. Falling under the influence of the persuasive techniques is something we have to watch. We do not always pay attention when it happens because advertisers try to influence us to buy products. To find their tricks can be helpful and fun because you will be amazed at what you will learn. Throughout the world, advertisers use the same tricks, and expect the same type of reaction from their consumer: buy it.

“Other moms will LOVE this new cleaner… I know I do!” That is just a common line for Plain Folks Appeal. Plain Folks Appeal is trying to show that “ordinary people just like you” love other family products. Moms or dads might want because they see that other non-famous people are using it and says it is good for families. This is one of the techniques that advertisers love to use for cleaning supplies, microwave dinners, and other family friendly products. I would know because it has happened to my family many times. For example, “My son just stained his pants; this is the one that got it out!” Laundry detergent is one of many that use this method a lot. Watch out moms, think for a second, is what your about to buy worth it? Is it good for the environment? Or is it a waste of money?

Germs, germs, germs. They are everywhere! Advertisers use the technique Hidden Fears technique to scare people about germs or the stains in your clothes will not come out. For example, there is a towel dispenser for sale and all it is, is a waste of the environment and your money because you really can use a towel. Wasting your money on unnecessary products will bring you nothing but regret and less money in your pocket. To be attractive advertisers scare you into believing that if you do not buy their product no one will like you. Are you scared now? Well do not be, because it is just a silly trick.

Don’t you hate it when you do not know the other side of something? I know I do. To see an advertisement without having the other side of the comparison is called Unfinished Comparison. For example, have you even seen a toilet paper and paper towel advertisement when advertisers say “Our product is better than the leading brand.” What is the leading brand? Advertising without the other half is common for most beauty products or skin care, for example ProActiv. Remember to ask yourself, what is the leading brand.

Try not to fall into advertising traps. Ask yourself before you buy, ”Do I really need this?” Advertising has one goal: to influence you to buy their product. If money is burning a hole in your pocket put it to better use. Over all, I anticipate that you will not be persuaded by the advertising tricks. Remember, DO NOT buy it.
